As a heatwave grips the UK, stay cool with our sweat saviours
With the UK heatwave meaning that it’ll be scorching until the end of the week across much of the country, we’re here to help you stay cool – and sane – in the heat, wherever and whatever you’re doing.

In a country where it rains at least nine months of the year, most of our homes aren’t equipped with air conditioning so having a good fan or two to help keep air circulating is important. While we dream of a Dyson, let’s be honest – spending upwards of £300 on a fan is beyond many of our financial means but that doesn’t mean you need to sweat it out.
This chrome floor fan from Robert Dyas is only £44.99 – a fraction of the price of a Dyson and dare we say it, a touch more stylish too. With three speed settings, you’ll be beating the heat in no time.
Heading out into the heat? Make sure you pack a fan in your bag too. We swear by this tiny but mighty number from John Lewis’ ANY DAY range.
Not only does it have three settings, the handle bends into a stand meaning that if you’re heading back to the office it can easily double up as a desk fan. USB-rechargeable, it comes in four colours and is an absolute bargain at only £12.
If you’re looking for a tiny fan to stash in even the smallest handbag or pocket, try one of these phone-powered numbers from £8.99 for two – plug in to your phone’s charging point and it’ll kick in instantly.
It’s never more important to stay hydrated than when temperatures soar. If tap water isn’t your vibe (Antonia is a water snob), invest in a home filtration system such as Brita’s Marella cool water jug, £19.95.
Our top tip? Invest in a couple of glass reusable water bottles to fill up and keep in the fridge so you’ve always got water to hand. These litre bottles are only £2 each from George Home
For when you’re on the move, keep your water cool with a refillable aluminium bottle. We’re suckers for S’well’s designs that come in a range of sizes, from 250ml to 750ml. We love this stylish Azurite design, from £17.50.
Bag too small for carrying your bottle? Keep it hands free with this fun macramé bottle holder from Oliver Bonas, £18.50
Another handbag essential on hot days is without a doubt a water spray – Avene’s Thermal Spring Water Spray comes in a handy 150ml size that fits comfortably in small bags – it’s currently on offer for only £6.37 at Boots.
Last summer was a learning curve in the fact that sunglasses and face masks don’t mix – while it’s no longer compulsory to wear face coverings in some settings, we’ll be keeping ours firmly on. What works with a mask in the heat? A hat or visor.
We love this handy roll up wide brim style that’ll keep the sun off your face and out of your eyes – it comes in an array of colours but we love this classic beige and black combination, only £12.99.
And if all else fails? May we suggest a paddling pool for wallowing in on those days that are truly too much to take. To help with maintenance, head to the baby aisle and grab a bottle of sterilising solution to keep the water from going green and you’ll have a whale of a time, minus the angst of algae. Plus, those tiny fishing nets that you’ll find in your local pet shop? Those are great for doing a quick cleaning sweep before your daily dip!
Desperate for a paddling pool TODAY? Head to your local branch of Wilko to snap up this £15 version. It’s just about big enough to squeeze in a lilo – if you close your eyes and grab a cold beer, you can pretend you’re anywhere other than your back garden. Here it is on Antonia’s former roof terrace in all its glory last summer.
Looking for something slightly smaller and a little more stylish? This tie dye Sunnylife pool is £45 and 130cm wide.
Not making it to Hydra this summer? Bring the Greek islands to your outdoor space with this Matiasma eye design, £49, also from Sunnylife.
