9 garden updates, because summer is actually here

Here at The Style Life, we’ve decided to pack away our passport for now. Travelling this season feels unbearably chaotic and instead we’ve vowed to invest in our own little slices of heaven instead. We’ve pulled together some of our favourite garden updates that will help you create your own oasis, whether you’re dealing with a big garden or a small patio, you can create that holiday feel at home, no problem.

Outdoor rugs… yes it’s a thing

Outdoor rugs are we suppose some kind of an oxymoron perhaps but they are great for creating a homely feel in an outdoor space. If you have a sizeable garden or even a garden that has grass and patio/decking, then an outdoor rug is a great way of designating zones within one space. An outdoor rug helps to build an alfresco living room as it were and is a brilliant way of adding contrast, texture and colour to any outdoor area. On a patio or balcony it can really lift the space and again help to create a mood. Look for tile inspired or vintage prints to help you recreate a holiday feel without leaving home.

Light up the night

Not looking for a massive update but do want to add a bit more of a style to your outdoor space? Lanterns could be the easy homeware piece you’re looking for. If you’re planning some stylish alfresco evenings, then don’t forget about the need for lighting. Lanterns make for great mood setters, whether it’s date night in the garden or dinner with friends, a series of lanterns help ensure guests can see what they’re doing and eating without the harsh glare of proper light fixtures, particularly good for outdoor movie nights! When looking for lanterns, think about texture and scale. Play with proportions to add interest and drama and look for beautiful casings, such as this stylish bamboo pair.

Take a seat

Outdoor seating has understandably had unprecedented demand since the summer of 2020 but luckily it feels like supply has finally caught up with demand and it’s definitely easier this summer to bag some garden furniture. If you’re tight on space then the Ikea bistro collection of tables and chairs is absolutely perfect. A great price point, the tables and chairs fold flat, making them ideal for storing away during the rest of the year and they’re super easy to put together too, making them very transportable as well. They come in a colour of different colour ways and in options of two or four seating arrangements.

Acapulco at home

If you can’t jet off this summer, bring the holiday home with these fun ‘Acapulco’ chairs from Homebase. Great for relaxing in the garden in, rather than dining in, these striking chairs are a brilliant way of injecting vibrancy into your outdoor space.

Print paradise

Unlike a room, the great outdoors has no real barriers and so you can often afford to be far more playful with colour and print. We’re particularly loving this tile style print from French Connection. Don’t feel you need to invest in all matching print pieces, but do use any prints as a springboard for the rest of your decor and pick out key accent colours to pull the space together.

Let the games begin

We’re so excited that the sun is finally here (hopefully to stay) and we’re prepping for a season of outdoor activities. Garden games are great for all age groups and this brightly coloured Jenga set will not only look fab, it guarantees hours of fun too.

Magic Mirror

Like garden rugs, garden mirrors are definitely a thing. They’re an amazing way of making your garden look bigger and a large statement mirror will really set the tone for the rest of the space. This one is particularly beautiful, designed like a window, the iron grids even open like a door, really creating a magical, secret garden effect. Stunning.

Lightbulb moment

Not keen on open flames and candle lit lanterns, we get it. If you want a lighting solution that is simply powered by the sun, then you’re in luck. Solar lighting has come along way and there are lots of options available right now. From bargain bits on Amazon, to super stylish selections at independent homeware stores, there are plenty of designs too. From lantern inspired silhouettes, to fairy lights and pretty festoon ideas, you’ll be spoilt for choice at every price point. We love these statement lightbulbs, classy and fabulous.
