Don’t call it a Throwback.
Cast your mind back to 2010 and one of the key fashion moments of that year was undoubtedly the launch of the Mulberry Alexa handbag, named after Alexa Chung – model, TV presenter and now Fashion Entrepreneur with her own eponymous label.

With a waiting list in the thousands, the bag became THE item to swing nonchalantly from your blazer-and-Breton-clad shoulder. Every fashion girl worth her salt was seen carrying the braided handle satchel, which ranged in price from £500 to up to £1500 for limited editions in the hopes of emulating even a fraction of Chung’s laidback cool-girl aesthetic.
Back then, Alexa herself wasn’t involved in the design of the bag, acting instead as the face of the bag but all that has changed with her latest collaboration with Mulberry. Speaking to the Sunday Times Style yesterday, Alexa described the moment the brand reached out as “like an ex-husband calling.. being like ‘we were pretty good together, right?’’
Fast forward to 2021 and Chung has teamed up with Mulberry as part of the brand’s 50th birthday celebrations. The (very) capsule collection features two exclusive designs: The Big Guy and The Little Guy.
The Big Guy
Based once again on the classic satchel shape, The Big Guy is designed to be a versatile bag that goes with everything and works all day, a bag that you can literally chuck everything in. With both a top handle reminiscent of the original Alexa bag but with a modern update of a chunky gold chain strap, the initial drop features four colourways – Denim Blue, Tan Suede, Black Patent and a very feature Dark Chocolate Choc with prices starting at £995.
The Little Guy
Meanwhile, the Little Guy is more of an elegant, slimline silhouette. Once more referencing classic satchel designs with two front straps but swapping the chunky chain for a more delicate gold chain, ideal for evenings. Available in a fun apple green, classic black leather and two velvet options that cry out for subtle stroking, the Little Guy will hold all of your essentials without any bulk. Prices start from £795.
And for anyone who still lusts after the original Alexa handbag, there’s good news – the brand has reissued the Alexa in a handful of limited edition versions. Our favourite? The oversized black patent Alexa, £1495 below.
Now, where did we put our ballet flats?
